FIGHTING TILL THE END

As it was reported before, QUEEN + Paul Rodgers are to issue a live album on September 12th - to be followed in six weeks by a DVD. Recorded at Sheffield on May 9th, the double CD called "Return Of The Champions" omits only one song from the show, "Under Pressure", but the rest is intact... save for the Eminem intro. Hopefully, the DVD will have the former, not the latter.

UNCOMFORTABLY DUMB?

While PINK FLOYD's "The Wall" seemed queasy to many, it doesn't lack consistency. To turn the concept head over heels - and, possibly, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the album's reign - Billy Sherwood took the trouble to produce a tribute to the record. "Back Against The Wall", out on September 27th, gathers many of a prog rock heroes, even though some tracks have come from 2000's "Pigs And Pyramids" album - see the tracklisting. Now, it won't be boring, yet it also won't whole anymore.

PURPLE GO RAP(T)

Two years ago, when DEEP PURPLE teamed up with American producer Michael Bradford and came up with "Bananas", it felt like a fresh breeze in the face. For their next album, the six re-united, and on October 21st "Rapture Of The Deep" will see the light of day - in three ways. There'll be a regular edition and the limited one. The latter is said to be put in a metalbox and enhanced with an interview, yet what it'll surely have is a bonus song, "MTV" for Europe and "Things I Never Said" for Japan. The Carroll-like cover is teasing, and music shouldn't disappoint as well.

DON'T YOU START AWAY UNEASY

Whichever JETHRO TULL album you love the most, the common wisdom keeps 1971's "Aqualung" in the highest esteem, so in November 2004 the band holed up at the XM Radio studios in Washington to play their classic through, from the first song to the very last, live. Now, Ian Anderson has properly remixed the recording, added the between-song banter as bonus tracks and, thus, compiled a CD that will be given away to ticket holders on the most of the TULL's US tour dates in October and November - but those who won't attend can get a hold of the "Live Aqualung" too. A limited edition is released in Europe in September and in America the next March, with all artist and publishing royalties going to the charities for the homeless. Homeless like Aqualung himself. The order of the songs part is the same as on the original album, and the bonus allow a listener to program his own show.

Which they won't be able to do with "Ian Anderson Plays The Orchestral Jethro Tull". Out on DVD and CD on October 4th, it's the One-Legged Fluteman's show recorded in December 2004 in Mannheim, Germany, with the Neue Philharmonie Frankfurt Orchestra. There are TULL classics and solo cuts re-tooled afresh. Sure, Ian's voice isn't as great as it used to be, but - as this scribe witnessed on a couple of occasions - Big A's showmanship is astounding. So the DVD must be much greater than CD that looks like this:

THE TIMES THEY ARE NOT CHANGIN'

History's repeating. Two years ago some retail networks were irked when THE ROLLING STONES inked a deal with Best Buy for an exclusive distribution of the band's "Four Flicks" DVD set and removed the ensemble's products from their shelves. Not that THE STONES suffered too much from that, especially when the set became available everywhere, but now it's Bob Dylan's turn to suffer. HMV Canada has pulled old Zimmy's CDs from their public stock in response to his Bobness' decision to sell his "Live At The Gaslight, 1962" album exclusively in Starbucks coffee shops. Not that the decision is too clever; if Starbucks-only Elton John's Christmas album, our later in the year, is quite aimed at the shops clientele, it's unlikely there's many pre-fame Dylan's fans among them lot.

As for the album itself, it takes a lot to laugh and a train to cry it hasn't been released before: with only two classic tracks on, it's a unique document of an era long gone:

SPIRITS IN THE LIGHT

Manfred Mann is more than just an artist: he's a British music institution whose ensembles' ranks have always included great musos and produced great music. When MANFRED MANN, the hugely successful '60s group, split and CHAPTER III ended charting non-commercial waters, nobody could safely bet on Manfred's glorious return. It came as a surprise - even more so once it became clear that Mann's new direction lay in the crosshair of progressive and hard rock. Slowly but surely, MANFRED MANN'S EARTH BAND made their way to the top, and what a rocky road it was. Some things got lost on the way - to be gathered now on "Odds & Sods - Mis-takes & Out-takes (30 Years of Manfred Mann's Earth Band)". The four-disc collection is a treasure trove for a true fan, who will surely object that the band's first album was, in fact, released more than three decades ago, in 1972, and this collection has gems dating back as early as 1969. Still, no one will argue that their finest hour dawned in 1975, with the fantastic "Nightingales And Bombers" album. Quite a reason to celebrate. Come all without, come all within!

BEEN KINDA SNEAKY

Strange band is the other name for FAMILY. Sure, their music is not to everyone's taste and Roger Chapman's voice may feel alien to many. Still, there's always been an elusive charm in what they did while they were doing it. The group don't exist anymore, so those missing it greatly will find a great comfort in a new box set, "Old Songs New Songs". Yes, it bears the title of a 1971's album that was released in the US only, on 8-track and cassette tape, and though a CD version was planned for in 1990, it's only now that the recordings have been remastered for inclusion in the set, which has much more rarities on it. A reproduction of the 1970 Isle Of Wight Festival programme falls in this category as well, and it makes sense to make hay, as there's a bonus CD attached to the initial quantities of the box.
