Hot Rocks (Japan)

  • Hot Rocks 1964-1971 [UICY-79767 / 8]. Re-issue to celebrate 50th anniversary of this compilation.

    Release date January 21, 2022

    Japan for the ROW edition.

This edition can be distinguished by barcode on OBI.It is 0 18771 99952 2. For Japanese only edition barcode on OBI is different: 4988031464922. In terms of package Japan for the ROW and Japan for Japan editions are identical other than barcode and small details of the OBI.

    Package:

    - Gatefold mini LP replica faithfully reproduces 2021 US/EU LP design.

    - Replica of the OBI for the 1st edition Japanese LP

    - OBI for current edition (different for Japan and the ROW)

    - Two inner sleeves replicating designs of a catalog insert and a company sleeve included with the original LP.

    - Two embossed lithographs featuring Michael Joseph's photographs

    - Japanese booklet with essay in Japanese and lyrics in English and Japanese

    - CDs in protective sleeves

    - Packed in outer resealable plastic sleeve.

This is very decorative and well packed re-issue. It is Hot Rocks, but the outer looks are exceptional.

Digital content for this compilation is a different question.

UM Japan stated: Remastered by Bob Ludwig. They told a part of the truth. This re-issue is not a clone of 2002 version (as one would expect from Bob Ludwig remark). In 2022 they re-assemble the whole thing. Technically, they used Bob Ludwig mastering, but the different one.

    For CD1:

-all mono tracks (Tracks 3-8) originated from In Mono box, 2016. They are almost identical to 2016 other than small level shift. Definitively, they are not from 2002. Note, Satisfaction here was replaced with mono version. In 2002 it was in narrow stereo mix.

-all stereo tracks on CD1 seem to be from unedited master tapes. TIOMS has tons of 'sand'/statics in the intro, like old West German London CD. That static was cleaned for 2002 SACD re-issue program. UMT and LSTNT are very hissy. PIB intro and stereo scene are different from 2002 version. Here left channel is completely blanked out during intro, while for previous editions there was some audio bleeding from the right. On the positive side - Ruby Tuesday came in correct version with extra vocal overdub in chorus. In 2002 they pulled the wrong tape w/o that overdub. Also, all stereo tracks a a bit louder and more compressed comparing to 2002 edition. They are equalized differently and sound more bright.

    For CD2:

    - tracks from Beggars Banquet and Let It Bleed are presented in the same mastering as on 50th Anniversary re-issues of the albums from 2018 and 2019 (within small level shift). These are not 2002 versions.

    - JJF and HTW, apparently were also prepared at the time of 50th anniversary editions of Beggars Banquet and Let It Bleed, respectively. JJF is identical to the one that appeared recently on Japanese only SHM-single Jumpin’ Jack Flash/Gimme Shelter [UICY-69010]. The origin of HTW is not known to me.

-Midnight Rambler seem to be from unedited tape transfer. There is that infamous electrical 'crunch' on 4.19-4.20 mark. It was on all pre-2002 re-issues of this track but was removed for 2002 SACD-hybrid.

    - Brown Sugar and Wild Horses are almost identical to 2002 Hot Rocks versions other than small level shift.

So this is funny mixed bag.

In terms of package (and 'stamps collecting') this edition is a must have. From the point of view of unique mastering, probably, too. But I must admit the sound of this compilation is a bit unusual to me. That hiss on stereo tracks of CD1 is a kind of disturbing, it was not that obvious on previous editions. And I am not big fan of the treatment/remaster Beggar's Banquet and Let It Bleed got in 2019 and 2019, respectively. So, almost all CD2 causes mixed emotions too. Well, 28-30€ is reasonable price for 2SHM-CD oddity, but this is the case when you should choose your medicine wisely.

  • Thank you for the fantastic review, Ironbelly :)

The review of the Audio-Tracks is very interesting !

I can't understand, why they NOT use the Stereo-Masters

    of the 2002 SACD-Edition.

Maybe a thing of copyrights - or they wanna make

sound it like a bit more to the ORIGINAL-LP ;)
